APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The Appleton Police Department is taking on a new program to help with bike thefts.
Bike Index is an online platform used to help recover lost bicycles. The Appleton Police Department will be partnering with the platform beginning this summer.
Bike Index was first established in 2013, and has since helped recover over 12,027 bicycles around the world. The free platform currently has over 225,000 bikes registered as a proactive measure to protect them if they go missing.
Appleton Police Chief, Polly Olson, says sometimes it’s difficult to reunite a lost or stolen bike with it’s owner.
“Many times bikes get stolen and recovered, and it’s difficult to find the original owner because they don’t report it to police or they don’t have a good description of the bike.” said Chief Olson.
On Bike Index, bike owners can go to the website and register their bike by putting in a description, serial number, and picture. If the bike is stolen, they can then say where the bike was stolen from and people from around the country are able to help look for the bike and reunite it with the owner.
More information about the Appleton Police Department’s partnership with Bike Index will be provided in the coming months.
