WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Sunday was the final day of the 2023 sturgeon spearing season.
On Lake Winnebago, 53 sturgeon were harvested. There were 4 juvenile females, 29 adult females, and 20 males. Josh Ausloos speared the largest fish of the day, an F1 female weighing 106.9 lbs and measuring 75.4 inches long. The fish was registered at the Pipe registration station.
1,405 fish were harvested overall on the entire Winnebago system. There were 155 juvenile females, 599 adult females, and 651 males. For comparison, 1,519 fish were harvested in the 2022 season, although ice conditions were notably more ideal then.
The southeast corner of Lake Winnebago saw the highest harvest for the season. The Pipe registration shack held the lead in number of fish registered opening weekend with 124 fish and continued to have the highest registration numbers throughout the season with a total of 399 fish. The Southwest Winnebago and Stockbridge registration stations both had the next most fish registered at about 200 fish each.
46 fish speared this season weighed over 100 pounds. 9 of these came from the Upriver Lakes and 37 from Lake Winnebago. The largest fish speared this season was a 177.3 lbs. 79.9 inch F4 female that was harvested from Lake Winnebago and registered at the Southwest Winnebago registration station.
