GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Happy birthday to the city of Green Bay!
The city was founded on Feb. 27, 1854.
To celebrate its 169th birthday, the city is unveiling an exhibit on the second floor of City Hall. It includes a timeline of the city’s founding, a history before incorporation, information about the old City Hall building and Fort Howard and details about buildings that predate 1854 that are still standing. Other areas of City Hall also include photos and maps from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Self-guided walking tours of historic neighborhoods are also available.
“This is a great opportunity for members of the public to visit and learn a bit about Green Bay’s storied history,” Mayor Eric Genrich said in a news release. “We’ll also be sharing pieces of the exhibit digitally, through the City’s social media channels, and we invite the public to share memories of their own.”
The city is also lighting the downtown bridges blue and green to make the milestone.
The exhibit will be on display until March 20 during City Hall’s regular operating hours.
Looking ahead, the city plans to celebrate Founders Day neat year. Officials are looking for public suggestions to celebrate the 170th birthday. Submissions can be made through the Contact the Mayor form on the city’s website.
