GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Incumbent Mayor Eric Genrich and Brown County Director of Administration Chad Weininger are moving on to the general election April 4, with Weininger beating Genrich by 87 votes.
Both candidates served in the State Assembly, Genrich as a Democrat and Weininger as a Republican.
While Genrich has spent the past four years as mayor, Weininger has spent the past eight years as Brown County’s Director of Administration.
Both candidates are also saying they are the candidate to fix Green Bay’s roads and keep the city safe.
Weininger has said Green Bay is going in the wrong direction when it comes to crime.
Meanwhile, Genrich points out his city budgets have fully funded the police and fire departments.
FOX 11 caught up with Weininger a few minutes after the results were released. He said he was surprised by how close the outcome was.
“But talking with the folks at the doors, I know there is a lot of support out there. They like the message and it’s about pushing over the next six weeks and getting that message out so I can reach more voters. There is a common value and theme of making Green Bay a more affordable place to live with safer streets and better infrastructure and having better economic opportunities.”
Genrich released the following statement Tuesday night once the votes were counted:
Tonight we successfully secured our place on the April ballot. I want to thank every Green Bay citizen who has placed their trust in me again. The April election presents a clear choice for Green Bay voters: will we continue to make progress on public safety, infrastructure, and inclusive community development, or will we fall back? I’m committed to continued progress on these fronts and more, and I have a proven record to run on. Over the next six weeks I look forward to communicating the progress we’ve made and the work that’s left to be done.
Genrich and Weininger beat out real estate agent Jane Juza and Paul Boucher in the primary race.
Just 13,092 total votes were cast in the city of about 107,015 people.
