APPLETON/GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — February is Black History Month; which can be celebrated by supporting Black-owned businesses in the community.
The Cozzy Corner in Appleton has been serving up their southern cooking in their unique and bluesy atmosphere since 2013 in Downtown Appleton. Owner Philip Bennett says in February they work to support other Black-owned businesses.
“We give out coupons and we ask the other owners if they have any deals going on,” said Bennett. “We’re trying to spotlight other African American owned stores in the area.”
In addition to the Cozzy Corner, Bennett also owns Envy Fits and Fashion, Legends Cuts and Styles, and The Cozzy Express; which are all located in the Fox River Mall.
In Green Bay, Lovell Richardson owns Lovell Richardson Photography. For Black history month, he is offering special sessions that showcase Black beauty and heritage. He says his goal is to make his clients feel like kings and queens.
“I’ve always been into art and creativity, and I’ve always loved uplifting people,” said Richardson. “When I was younger I was one of those people who didn’t feel good about themselves, and I didn’t like myself. I refuse to let anyone go through that.”
Both Bennett and Richardson said that besides being a patron of Black-owned businesses, other ways to support them include sharing social media posts and writing reviews.
