GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay area students will now have a direct pathway to continue their education after graduating high school.
UW-Green Bay announced a partnership with Green Bay public schools to offer direct admission to the university Monday.
Green Bay public school’s class of 2024 will no longer be required to complete a college application.
Instead, they’ll be directly admitted to UW-Green Bay.
“What we want to be is Green Bay’s university,” said Jennifer Jones, vice chancellor for enrollment management at UWGB.
She says UWGB is the first college to offer direct admission in the state.
“We’re saying we have a spot reserved for you at UW-Green Bay,” said Jones. “What you need to do is tell us about your dreams, tell us what you’re interested in. Let’s see how Green Bay can help you get there.”
Students and their families will work with career counselors to determine a path to support each student’s goals beyond high school.
“It’s great to have a local option, especially because a lot of parents want their children to succeed,” said Cristina Montejano, a career counselor at UW-Green Bay.
She says UWGB will work with students, even if they end up beginning at a technical college, or not going to college at all.
“I’m looking forward to having those conversations with students, teachers, kind of going into the classrooms everything to let them know more about how they can find us and how we can connect,” said Montejano.
The university says the initiative can help everyone, but is primarily aimed at students who want or need to stay local for their education, can’t afford the cost of a dorm, or want to work while they go to school.
The university also addressed what happens if the high school student doesn’t meet UW-Green Bay standards.
“So if a student is not on track to graduate, what we want to do is get them graduated from high school. That’s our first conversation with them,” said Jones. “What’s it going to take? Then let’s take the next steps and maybe start slow, maybe do full-time, depends what that student wants and needs, but we’re not going to tell any student they can’t talk to us because they’re not qualified for this.”
Chancellor Michael Alexander says this year, UWGB is piloting direct admission with 31 local students.
So far, 21 of those students have committed to attending UW-Green Bay.
