APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Fox Valley residents are encouraged to ride the bus on Friday in honor of Transit Equity Day.
The national holiday promotes the public’s right to safe, affordable and reliable transportation.
It also honors the birthday of Rosa Parks, the black woman who refused to give up her seat on a public bus during the civil rights movement in 1955.
“Valley Transit is committed to creating an inclusive environment that values diversity and understanding every day,” said Ron McDonald, Valley Transit general manager. “Transit Equity Day and the city’s proclamation to observe this day are an avenue for us to bring further awareness to the work that we do 365 days a year to ensure safe, reliable transportation.”
Approximately 54% of rides provided by Valley Transit are employment based, making public transportation a vital service for the Fox Cities area. Nationwide, public transportation is crucial to the economic, social and environmental well-being of communities.
