MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A former Two Rivers teacher was sentenced Wednesday to three months in jail for having a sexual relationship with a student.
Rebecca Kilps, 35, pleaded no contest to one count of sex assault of a student by a school staff member and two counts of sex with a child age 16 or older.
However, due to a deferred prosecution agreement she was not convicted of the sexual assault of a student by a school staff member. That agreement lasts for five years, and if she violates any of the conditions, she would return to court for additional sentencing.
She was also placed on probation for three years by Judge Robert Dewane. She cannot have contact with anyone under 18, except for immediate family. She also must undergo a psychosexual evaluation and follow through, plus continue with mental health treatment.
Kilps apologized before the sentence was issued.
My guilty and shameful heart has been carrying around the burden of my actions for what seems like an eternity, but it’s with that time I’ve been able to process the true gravity of my decisions and the hurt that I have caused to so many.
Kilps first apologized to the student, who she only identified by his initials, calling him an innocent bystander during “a time in my life of deep sadness and, ultimately, my unjustifiable behavior.”
According to the criminal complaint, Kilps’ husband discovered suspicious messages in her phone and confronted her about it.
Police talked to the teen, who said he met Kilps in Spanish class. They would occasionally exchange messages on social media, but earlier this year, the frequency increased and the subject matter became more personal. He then detailed several sexual encounters between them.
Kilps initially denied to police there was any sexual contact, but later admitted it, telling police she knew it was illegal.
