John Kennedy PC: Fox 11 Online
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay’s bridges will light up in multiple colors to remember a man who died after he could not navigate his wheelchair on city-owned, snow-covered sidewalks.
Wednesday marks 12 years since 20-year-old John Kennedy of Green Bay was hit and killed while operating his wheelchair on Velp Avenue.
The lighting of bridges will also serve as reminder to shovel your sidewalks.
The red and purple lights represent John’s favorite colors, the yellow lights will bring attention to Wisconsin’s Hit and Run Alert System, the blue lights will show gratitude and support for law enforcement who worked to solve Kennedy’s case and a combination of red and white will show support and gratitude for Green Bay Area Crime Stoppers who received the anonymous tip.
As part of a lawsuit settlement following Kennedy’s death, the city changed its sidewalk shoveling policy. It states all sidewalks must be shoveled 24 hours after snow is done falling. If it isn’t, the city could come clear it, and bill the property owner.
