FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Fond du Lac County continues to support those affected by the deadly crash that took place early Saturday morning.
Three teenagers were a part of that crash and one has been confirmed dead by authorities.
According to an obituary, 16-year-old Nevins Zoch died Saturday in the crash. Since then, the community has been mourning.
One other passenger was flown to a hospital for life threatening injuries; another was taken to a nearby hospital in an ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries. There has been no further update on their condition.
The Fond du Lac High School principal shared with FOX 11 how each student had a connection to the school.
“Two of the students went here for their freshman year, and one still currently goes here,” says principal Dave Michalkiewicz.
He says Tuesday was a hard day for many students.
“Kind of a somber day for a lot of people here at the high school. I think a lot of kids knew the students and are either directly or indirectly impacted through tragic experiences that they’ve had in their lives that come up when these situations happen. So, we’ve been trying to focus on supporting all of our kids and staff as well.”
The Fond du Lac Boys Hockey Team identified another passenger as Tommy Koenigs. They held a fundraiser for him Tuesday night.
The team will be accepting donations that will go towards medical expenses for the family.
“What we decided as a board is that we were going to match up to $1,500 worth of funds that come from this donation… this will go to the Koenigs family,” says President of Fond Du Lac High School Hockey Booster Club Tom Bonlander.
Bonlander tells FOX 11 doing a hockey fundraiser for Tommy makes sense.
“Tommy actually played for Fondy last year but transferred over to Springs this year. It doesn’t matter what school they go to, all the parents here root for each others kids… In the end we’re all a family.”
The Fond du Lac School District is offering a number of counseling services to students that began on Saturday.
“Once we found out it did involve one of our students and two former students, we began drafting our supports and our grieving processes of what we could help with,” says Michalkiewicz.
“It’s tough because we all know these kids, we know who they are, it’s something that it’s hard to believe it actually happened,” says Bonlander.
Authorities continue to investigate Saturday’s crash. They say speed and alcohol were factors.
