Vietnam Veteran Honored with Northeast Wisconsin Veteran of the Year Award

Weaver received several nominations for this award.

He served as a medic in the Vietnam War.

“Once deployed to Vietnam in 1968, he started in a Prisoner of War Medical Facility where he was charged with keeping enemy troops alive. He then returned to California to the Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco where he provided care to the wounded service members who had made it back home, until his discharge in 1969,” says Gallagher.

Tearful times were shared about his service.

“That year we lost 16,000 young Americans in combat, in the medical core we dealt with all of that,” says Weaver.

Although Kaukauna resident Mike Weaver’s military service is technically over, he says he will continue to serve his community in any way he can.

“Some key examples of his dedication to our community include, past President and Lieutenant Governor for Wisconsin’s Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the board for The Heart of the Valley Chamber, Special Olympics Fox Valley Coach, Emergency Medical Technician, Rifle Team Member for Kaukauna VFW,” says Gallagher.

He also served as a mentor for the Outagamie County Veterans Treatments Court, and was Chaplain of the Disabled Americans Veterans Appleton Post.

He says service will always be a part of his life.

“It’s in my heart, it’s my passion and I’ve always treated it as a calling,” says Weaver.

Gallagher says it was a great honor to present this award.

“Vietnam vets came back to a totally different environment, a lot of cases they couldn’t wear their uniform, they were spit on…so anytime we can give Vietnam vets the recognition they didn’t get when they came back from their service that’s really cool,” says Gallagher.

Gallagher says they will start to process next year’s recipient soon.
