BROWN CO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – To curb reckless driving in work zones, Brown County set up a traffic enforcement operation and caught some dangerous drivers in the act.
Last week, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Highway Commission reported seeing an uptick in close calls involving vehicles and highway workers.
As promised, the sheriff’s office and the Wisconsin State Patrol put additional eyes on work zones Monday.
The sheriff’s department said the results were disappointing in that the number of violations were excessive.
During the three-hour evening event, law enforcement officers:
Conducted 20 traffic stops in work zones
Issued 13 citations and 7 warnings for speeding
Issued 1 citation for a violation of the Move Over or Slow Down statue
Issued 1 citation for using a cell phone in a work zone
One driver was cited for driving 80 mph in a 55 mph construction zone
Officials say the goal is to ensure safety for both drivers and highway workers, adding it’s important to slow down, be attentive and put down your cell phone when approaching and traveling through work zones.
Fines double in work zones.
