MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s three major league sports joining forces to provide what they promise will be an unforgettable experience for veterans.
The Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks will host a Stars and Stripes Flight of Champions honor flights on October 8th.
Honor flights take veterans to visit monuments that memorialize the wars they fought in. One flight will leave Green Bay’s Austin Straubel International Airport and two flights will leave Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport.
Approximately 240 Korean War and Vietnam War veterans will be able to go.
When the three planes arrive at Washington Dulles International Airport, the veterans, their guardians and team representatives will spend the day touring Washington.
The tour will include the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Marine Corps/Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
Veterans can sign up now online to join the honor flight. Veterans can also talk to their local VA’s to put them in touch with this organization to join.
A public welcome home gathering will also be set at both Green Bay and Milwaukee’s airports when the veterans return home on the evening of Oct. 8.
Members of the public are encouraged to arrive at either airport between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to give veterans the welcome home they never had.
