It’s been nearly three weeks since the Milwaukee Brewers won a series but the bats delivered as the Crew took the rubber game from their rivals, beating the Chicago Cubs 9-7 on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field. After an excruciating 4-3 extra inning loss Friday night, allowing only a pair of Ian Happ home runs, Milwaukee bounced back with a 7-0 shutout behind Brandon Woodruff and a 4 for 5 night including a three run blast from Christian Yelich on Saturday night. Yelich finished off a sizzling 7 for 10 weekend with a two run bomb in the 4th. Kolton Wong added a two run homer in the 5th and top prospect Garrett Mitchell made his first major league start in centerfield and contributed with his first big league hit, a two run single. The 16 hit attack helped deliver win number 10 for starter Eric Lauer who struggled with control early, falling behind 2-0. Lauer made it through five innings, giving up four runs on six hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Brad Boxberger got hit hard in the 9th trying to protect a 9-5 lead, giving up two runs on three hits without recording an out before Devin Williams came on to close the door for his ninth save.
The Brewers move to 67-59 but remain 6 games back of St. Louis in the NL Central race as the Cardinals beat the Braves 6-3. With Kansas City knocking off San Diego 15-7, the Brewers are a game and a half behind the Padres for the final Wild Card spot and they’re 2 and a half games behind Philadelphia holding the second Wild Card after the Pirates beat the Phillies 5-0. Pittsburgh is next for the Brewers as Corbin Burnes will start the opener of a three game series at home. It’s a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
