FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Around 7:20 Saturday morning, Fond du Lac police and detectives responded to a 911 call of someone laying on the ground in the 200 block of Marquette Street.
Police found a 40 year old man dead on this sidewalk Saturday morning with an apparent gunshot wound. The man has been identified as Brandon A. Johnson.
“It’s getting worse, used to feel really safe here now, not so much anymore and this is just way too close to home,” says Fond du Lac resident Carrie Shipton.
Shipton says her neighborhood isn’t what it used to be.
“I heard four gunshots, it was like pow then pow pow then pow kind of spaced like that my husband got up to look out the window and didn’t really see much, he saw one guy walking down the street but just kind of casually so didn’t really think anything of it, and he assumed they were fireworks and so we went back to bed.”
Shipton says she heard arguing, yelling, and car motors revving in the middle of the night, but when she looked out her front door she did not see anything.
Even when police arrived on scene, she didn’t piece together what was going on.
“I heard the sirens and I heard them stop right out here, but I was so exhausted cause I just had been up half the night that I didn’t get up and look,” says Shipton.
Others who live in the area told us they also think the neighborhood’s overall safety has gone down.
As for Shipton, she’s thankful her child did not find the body during on what’s usually his morning routine.
“My son, he walks this sidewalk to work every morning and I am really thanking God right now that he called in sick last night because he would have probably been the one to discover the body,” says Shipton.
Detectives are working to identify possible suspects, as of 11:20 Saturday morning, police said there was no one in custody.
Officials say the details that led up to the death are unknown and an investigation is underway.
“Now I wish I had called the police because then he would have been found sooner, and maybe he would have lived who knows,” says Shipton.
Police say they are unable to release any other details at this time.
