MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Traffic now flows two ways on several streets in downtown Manitowoc.
The traffic conversion happened early Monday morning on Eighth, 10th and 11th streets, between Washington Street and Waldo Boulevard.
The traffic used to flow from north to south along 11th to Tenth, and south to north on Eighth.
To mark the occasion, BRIX Restaurant on Eighth held a traffic-watching party.
The restaurant’s owner, Jacque Bartow, says she thinks many people favor the two-way streets.
“We are totally in favor because we’re hoping it slows traffic down a little bit. Just take a nice, slow stroll through downtown to see what our downtown has to offer,” said Bartow.
City officials say they’ll replace lighting on the Eighth and 10th Street bridges as part of the conversion. They say they’ll monitor the conversion and make necessary changes to signage and signals.
Mayor of Manitowoc Justin Nickels says there were no reported accidents on the streets as of 5 p.m. Monday. He also says that traffic was noticeably slower, which was one of the reasons why they converted the streets.
