TOWN OF SOMERSET, WI (WSAU) — An afternoon of tubing on the Apple River near the Minnesota and Wisconsin border in St. Croix County turned dangerous for five people on Saturday.
Officers were called to Somerset Township at about 3:45 for a report that five people had suffered stab wounds to their midsections. Several first responders arrived on the scene along with some good samaritans, who rendered first aid to the victims.
Two victims were airlifted to a hospital in St. Paul. Others were taken by ambulance. One, a 17-year-old boy from Stillwater, MN, was pronounced dead after he was taken by ambulance to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater.
The other four victims ranged in age from 20 to 24 and are in stable condition. The severity of their injuries ranges from serious to critical.
Two of those victims were from Luck, Wisconsin. The others were from Burnsville, MN and Elk River, MN.
The suspect was arrested near the tubing exit point after witnesses notified police that he was still in the area. Officers say he is a 52-year-old man from Prior Lake, MN, a southwest suburb of the Twin Cities, though have not released his name pending formal charges. It’s unclear if the suspect knew the victims.
