GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Tuesday marks less than two weeks away from the soccer match between two European teams at Lambeau Field.
FC Bayern Munich will take on Manchester City on Saturday, July 23rd.
He says the upcoming match is almost a sell-out.
“It’s well over 71,000 now but there are still some tickets available,” said Murphy.
2022 is a big year for Green Bay on the international market.
Not only are European soccer fans visiting, but the Packers are going to London in October.
“This year playing our game against the giants to what normally would have been a home game, you know it’s a hit to the community but I think doesn’t completely make up for it but it helps,” said Murphy.
Nick Meisner with Discover Green Bay says it’s estimating the soccer game will bring in $10 million for the area.
“That’s about two-thirds of what a normal Packers game is or 66% but that’s because there are so many unknowns with our first international soccer games,” said Meisner.
Meisner says that number could grow if people stay longer. He says hotels are filling up.
“We also have a lot of other events going on that weekend. EAA is starting down in Oshkosh. Training camp starts coming up that week as well,” said Meisner.
Austin Straubel International Airport director, Marty Piette says he expects every seat coming in and out of Green Bay will be full.
“For Packer home games it’s not unusual for us to see upwards of 100 private aircraft or charter aircraft come through. So this is a different venue, a different audience, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of those charter aircraft to come through for this game as well,” said Piette.
Packers and Discover Green Bay expect the friendly will be similar to an NFL home game.
Murphy says soccer fans will fit right in, and luckily so will the actual field.
“The field is going to just squeeze into Lambeau Field, soccer is a little wider than a football field. It’s something we’re really excited about,” said Murphy.
Hopefully giving the players enough room to Lambeau Leap, soccer style.
