The St. Louis Cardinals got a pair of two run homers in beating the Milwaukee Brewers for a second straight night, dropping Milwaukee back into second place in the National League Central Division race. The 5-4 win puts St. Louis at 40-31, one game better than the 39-32 Crew.
Paul Goldschmidt cracked a two run blast against starter Eric Lauer in the first inning. The Brewers had an answer with Rowdy Tellez going deep against Adam Wainwright. An Albert Pujols sacrifice fly gave St. Louis a 3-1 lead before Milwaukee rallied. Andrew McCutcheon’s solo shot pulled the Brewers within one and Milwaukee grabbed the lead with a two run fifth. Christian Yelich drove in a run and then McCutcheon came through again with an RBI double, the first and only hit with a runner in scoring position the entire series. The Brewers are just 1 for 20 against St. Louis pitching this week.
Lauer would give the lead right back however in the top of the 6th when Nolan Arenado launched a two run homer. Both bullpens finished it off. Hoby Milner and Trevor Kelley worked the final three innings allowing only one hit while striking out 8, Kelley had five in the six outs he recorded. However the St. Louis relievers were equal to the task. Johan Oviedo earned his first major league victory in relief and the Brewers were also kept off the board the rest of the way.
Milwaukee has a chance to share the division lead in the final game of the series Thursday afternoon. Jason Alexander will start for the Brewers against Dakota Hudson. Pre-game coverage begins at 12:35 PM with a 1:10 PM first pitch on WNFL.
