GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Several advocacy groups came together to celebrate Juneteenth at Joannes Park on Saturday.
Juneteenth, now in its second year as a federal holiday, recognizes the time where slaves were finally told of their freedom after the Civil War.
They were told months after emancipation.
Saturday’s celebration featured several-dozen Black-owned vendors, as well as family-friendly activities, like music and a community meal.
Organizers add the celebration is welcome to anyone who wants to participate.
“Solidarity is so important. Solidarity is love, and so we welcome anyone to join the event,” said Stephanie Ortiz, co-founder of Black Lives United–Green Bay, one of the group which organized the event, along with We All Rise: African-American Resource Center.
“When you see folks from different backgrounds coming together to celebrate the significance of Juneteenth, it feels exciting, it feels like togetherness, it feels like unity,” Ortiz added.
This is the third year the Juneteenth event has happened in Green Bay.
