They knew going in it was going to be an arduous stretch. The Milwaukee Brewers finished a run of 18 games in 17 days Sunday by falling to the San Diego Padres 6-4 in 10 innings at American Family Field. Thinned by injury and best with fatigue, the Brewers dropped the final three games of the series, getting shutout by San Diego both Friday and Saturday night.
Kolton Wong gave Milwaukee a quick jump with a lead off home run in the bottom of the first. Eric Lauer got through four innings unscathed but in the 5th, San Diego scored three times, only one of the runs was earned as a run down play was botched when reserve shortstop Pablo Reyes dropped the ball. Wong delivered again in the 8th, hitting a two run blast, the 5th multi-homer game of his career, which tied the score at 3.
Josh Hader pitched a scoreless ninth to tie a major league record with his 40th consecutive appearance without giving up a run. The Padres cashed in against Trevor Gott in the 10th however as Jake Cronenworth hit a three run homer. Andrew McCutcheon’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th wasn’t enough as Rowdy Tellez capped his 0 for 5 day by hitting into a game ending double play.
The Brewers went 9-9 during the 17 day stretch but have slumped to 33-23 overall and their lead over the St. Louis Cardinals is down to a half game after St. Louis beat the Cubs in Chicago Sunday night 5-3 in 11 innings.
After the badly needed day off, the Brewers will welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three game series.
