GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Interstate 41 expansion project will expand travel from four lanes to six lanes along I-41 between WIS 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) in Grand Chute to County F (Scheuring Road) in De Pere. Construction on the 23-mile project is expected to begin in 2024 but Wisconsin DOT says work has already begun including survey work and geotechnical/soil investigations.
“We still have a lot of work to do on the design side, including finalizing our design and how exactly we’re going to build the project, how we’re going to stage the project and manage the traffic flow during construction,” said I-41 Design Project Manager, Scott Ebel. “We also have a large amount of real estate acquisition that we’ll be needing to do for the project before the project can start construction, and also a lot of utility coordination…You’re gonna have additional lanes, so if there’s accidents, there’s just more lanes to get traffic around. You’re going to have a lot more safety improvements along the project.”
The I-41 Project includes the redesign of the I-41 and WIS 441 interchange from its current ramps to 55 mph flyover ramps.
“Currently, it’s a loop ramp configuration and we are going to be changing that to a higher speed flyover ramp configuration. Higher speed ramps are a lot safer for vehicles because you don’t have that change in speed,” Ebel said.
Additionally a diverging diamond interchange is scheduled at the Hwy. 15 (Northland), Hwy. 47 (Richmond St.) and County E (Ballard Road) exits in order to improve safety.
“They’re really efficient in handling a large traffic volumes getting on and off of the freeways, which we have at all of these locations. They’re also very safe for vehicles, and for pedestrians and bicyclists,” Ebel said.
