STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Sturgeon Bay man accused of attacking a woman, her two children and her grandfather, with a hedge trimmer, is facing multiple charges.
Police say they were dispatched to a residence on Georgia Street around 2:30 p.m. April 25 for a report of two men fighting in the front yard.
As officers were responding, they received a second 911 call from a woman who said she was attacked inside her home by an unknown man wielding a hedge trimmer.
Officials say the man entered the home without permission, looking to take car keys so he could leave town. Officials say that’s when the suspect struck the woman on the head with the hedge trimmer, causing her significant injuries. The woman’s two five-year-old children witnessed the attack. At one point, the suspect struck one of the children with his hand, injuring the child. The children then fled to another room where they barricaded themselves inside until police officers found them.
The woman’s grandfather was working in the backyard of the home when he heard the commotion inside. When the grandfather came inside to confront the suspect, the suspect began attacking him. Police say the grandfather fought back and the altercation ended outside where police arrived and arrested him. The grandfather sustained injuries as a result of being attacked.
The suspect, a 30-year-old Sturgeon Bay man, was not injured when officers put him under arrest.
During the investigation, officers learned the man also broke several windows to a home across the street, attempting to look for car keys there.
All injured individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment and have been released.
Police say they are recommending multiple charges against the man, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery with use of force, armed burglary, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, physical abuse of a child and criminal damage to property.
