APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The general contractor for the Appleton YMCA’s multi-million-dollar parking ramp project says it still does not know why a concrete span collapsed but says it does know when it happened.
Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction says the collapse occurred at night after work concluded on Friday, April 1. It involved two installed double tee panels. Fortunately, the construction site was not occupied at the time of the collapse, so no one was hurt or injured.
Hoffman says clean-up of the site will begin Tuesday and is expected to take 5-7 business days.
The investigation into what caused the collapse will continue as the clean up process begins.
Following clean-up, the damaged areas will be repaired or replaced and construction will resume.
Hoffman says that while construction was halted due to the collapse, it is not expected to have a measurable impact on the project’s schedule and completion.
Bill Breider, YMCA president/CEO wrote in a statement:

We have built a strong relationship with Hoffman over the years through various facility projects as well as their support of our mission. We know that Hoffman will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover why this occurred, take the necessary corrective action to get the project back on track, and ultimately deliver us a high-quality, safe, and reliable parking ramp.
Hoffman adds that while they cannot say for certainty what caused the collapse until the investigation is complete, it can say with 100% certainty that when the project is complete, the parking ramp will be safe, secure and sound.
Construction for the Appleton YMCA’s $7.5 million project began last fall.
The new parking ramp will have three stories and more than 300 stalls.
The project is scheduled to be completed this August
