APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University slugger Jacob Charon put on a power display, and it earned him Midwest Conference Player of the Week honors. Charon (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic), a senior outfielder, hit .600 in a three-game series at Grinnell College this past weekend. Charon went 6-for-10 with four home runs, nine runs batted in and six runs scored. Charon also walked four times for a .714 on-base percentage and that transfers into a massive 2.514 OPS for the series. In the opener, an 11-0 Lawrence victory, Charon went 2-for-3 and belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning and then hit another two-run shot in the sixth to finish with four runs batted in and three runs scored. In Lawrence’s 14-10 win in the nightcap, Charon went 4-for-5 with two homers, five runs batted in and three runs scored. He belted a three-run homer in the first and smacked a two-run bomb in the ninth. These were Lawrence’s first two-homer games since Patrick McDonnell homered twice against St. Norbert College on April 7, 2019. Charon is the first player in Lawrence history to hit four home runs in a doubleheader. Charon leads the team with a .438 batting average and is tops on the squad with nine homers and 23 runs batted in through 13 games. Charon has tied the season record for home runs set by Lawrence Hall of Famer Steve Blomberg back in 1972. Charon, who had just three homers coming into this season, now has 12 for his career, and that places him sixth on Lawrence’s career list. He is tied with Blomberg, who played just two seasons at Lawrence before joining the Kansas City Royals minor league system in 1972. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Charon and the second conference weekly award for the Vikings in 2022. Jonah Palmer was named Pitcher of the Week on March 21.
