GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay police are asking for help as they investigate reports of graffiti-related vandalism.
Police say they have “taken many reports of graffiti in the last week,” specifically “multiple reports” made March 14-15 on the city’s near west side.
“It’s really alarming because it really has drastic effects on the neighborhood, especially the people that live there…We need to work together as a community so that this doesn’t grow into a bigger problem,” said Commander Kevin Warych. “Every graffiti usually has some sense of meaning behind it. There’s some graffiti that we can try to put together with other incidents…Right now it’s really too early to tell what the meaning of that graffiti is, but I can tell you that is part of our decision making, part of our planning, and part of us analyzing the incident so that we can develop a motive which hopefully leads to a suspect.”
Right now, Warych says they’ve received 3-4 reports in that area.
“We want to make sure it doesn’t grow into five, ten, or fifteen incidents,” Warych told WTAQ News. “When someone is a victim of graffiti and this vandalism, they may have lived in that neighborhood 30 years and never had a problem, never been a victim of a crime, and all of a sudden that they’re faced with this one day. This is what we’re trying to prevent…We know the effect it has on homeowners, we know the financial cost is burdensome, and most importantly, we don’t want this crime occurred in our city. So we’re going to do everything we can to catch the people responsible for it.”
Those with camera footage they feel may be connected are asked to contact the police department. Those who are victims of graffiti or other vandalism who have not reported it are asked to contact the department by phone at 1-920-448-328 or through their website.
Police encourage leaving exterior lights on overnight to avoid being targeted.
