Championship Saturday has arrived at the Resch Center for the WIAA Girls State basketball tournament.
The Randolph Rockets captured the first championship of the day with a couple of firsts. The 47-31 victory over defending Division 5 champion Assumption was the first title for the girls from Randolph. The boys program has been a well decorated powerhouse for years. It also finished a 31-0 season for Head Coach Chad Kaufman’s team, the most wins ever for any state champ.
Assumption, led by Ainara Sainz deRozas with 11 points, stayed in it early, down 22-17 late in the first half but a 6-0 run by the Rockets made it 28-17 at the break. The lead grew steadily in the second half as Randolph cashed in most of the 20 Assumption turnovers into 25 points, more than half their game total.
Randolph got steady scoring from three in double figures, Maddie DeVries with 11, Abby Katsma and Jorey Buwalda with 10.
Assumption finishes 27-4, taking home the silver ball to pair with last year’s hardware. The Rockets meanwhile, soar over the moon with their first gold ball.
