The Appleton East Patriots will play for the Division 1 championship Saturday night after hanging on to beat Brookfield East 44-40 at the Resch Center in the second semifinal game.
Appleton East (25-4) looked to be in command when Emily LaChapell converted a three point play to give the Patriots at 41-30 lead with 8:40 to play. Incredibly, Appleton East would not make another field goal the rest of the night. The Spartans went on a 10-0 run, capped by Annika Pluemmer’s three point hit to make it a one point game with 4:14 remaining. Just as incredibly, Brookfield East would not score again.
Logan Lowry and LaChapell would combine to make 3 of 4 free throws in the frantic closing minutes to send Appleton East to the first title game in school history.
Pluemer led Brookfield East with 10 points, Maddy McGath had 8 points with 10 rebounds. The Spartans finish 25-4.
LaChapell led all scorers with 20. Sammy Beyer was next with 9 but it was a very nervous final nine minutes before the Patriots heard the horn and celebrated the win.
