WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The combination of light snow and heavy winds resulted in multiple ice rescues on at least two Northeast Wisconsin lakes Friday night.
Don Herman with SUNK? Dive and Ice Service tells FOX 11 he helped pull three to four vehicles out Lake Winnebago during a snow squall. He said people could not see where they were driving as they were trying to get off the ice, which resulted in vehicles finding cracks in the ice. To his knowledge, everyone made it off the lake safely.
Herman also said he heard of two or three vehicles falling into Lake Poygan and that a dive team was called. No further information on those rescues was provided.
The squall hit with many anglers in the Oshkosh area for the annual Battle on Bago. It is unknown if any of the rescues were connected to the event.
FOX 11 Chief Meteorologist Patrick Powell reports Oshkosh reached a peak wind gust of 46 mph at the time of the squall.
