MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A new report from Politico says Republican leaders are taking a liking to Milwaukee as host of their 2024 convention.
According to sources close to the situation, RNC officials were on the ground in the Cream City with former Governor Scott Walker on Thursday for a tour and site visits at Fiserv Forum and other venues that would host events during the week-long convention.
Local donors have reportedly committed tens of millions of dollars to the hosting efforts, and acting Mayor and City Council President Cavalier Johnson even joined the tour to make a hard pitch for the city despite his known Democratic stance.
You’ll remember that Milwaukee was supposed to hold the 2020 Democratic National Convention, but that became a virtual event that simply originated in part from the Convention Center due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following that event, former Mayor Tom Barrett had expressed the city’s interest in hosting the event proper in 2024 as a make-good. Though there’s been no word on where the Dems will take their next event.
Other cities vying for the ’24 GOP convention include Nashville, Salt Lake City, and Pittsburgh. All contending cities are considered Democratic strongholds.
