APPELTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Democratic State Rep. Lee Snodgrass, of Appleton, is coming under fire for a tweet she shared Thursday morning and has since deleted.
According to screenshots being shared on Twitter, Snodgrass tweeted “If parents want to “have a say” in their child’s education, they should home school or pay for private school tuition out of their family budget.”
A little more than an hour later, Snodgrass tweeted out that she deleted that tweet “since it was lacking in nuance and easily misinterpreted. I wouldn’t want anyone to think that parents do not have a role in their child’s public education-I sure did. I encourage all parents to engage in voting for school board, join PTO and meet with teachers.”
In other tweets, Snodgrass explains her point relates to fully funding public schools.
“I find it shocking,” said State Sen. Roger Roth, R-Appleton. “I think it’s one of those moments where politicians find themselves saying out loud what they’re thinking on the inside.”
Roth believes Snodgrass’s tweet was in response to a package of education bills he helped introduce. The legislation includes giving parents the right to determine their child’s school, religion, medical care and names and pronouns used at school. It also gives parents access to their child’s curriculum and to opt out of certain lessons.
“It basically just reaffirms that the parents have the fundamental right to raise their children, not unelected bureaucrats,” said Roth.
Governor Tony Evers’ office issued a statement about the legislation and Snodgrass’ tweets.
“I disagree with Rep. Snodgrass,” said Evers. “Parents are the first and best teachers our kids have, and we know parent involvement in their kids’ education is critical to ensuring every student’s success. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have to stop using our kids as political pawns. We should trust parents, educators, and schools to keep working together to do what’s best for our kids.”
