GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — New Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis has been in town for just over three months now, and is still settling in.
“I’m learning to adapt to much colder winter weather than I’m used to,” Davis told WTAQ on Wednesday. “But the area’s been great.”
Davis says that while the cross-country move was stressful, he joined a great police force.
“I have been continually amazed by the great work that our men and women do, and the level of dedication,” said Davis. “And, really, the commitment to doing it the right way.”
Previously, Davis was the Assistant Police Chief of the Portland Police Bureau, the law enforcement agency in Oregon’s largest city. The Portland Police Bureau was the subject of controversy throughout 2020 during rioting that took place in the city. Davis says the move from to Portland to Green Bay showcased a major thing that was missing at his previous department.
“There’s just this level of community support here for the police that’s amazing, and I see it every day,” Davis said. “I go back to how much better the relationship is between the police department and the community here. That’s made a really big difference. We’ve been able to do things here to address [problems] more quickly than in Portland because there’s that baseline of community support already there.”
Davis says the department has stepped up to the challenge of the last several weeks. Davis’ early tenure has been marked by a number of issues in the community.
“I think it’s been violence in public spaces in two areas one has been, obviously, an issue with gun violence, and then, obviously, we’ve had some issues with threats in schools,” said Davis.
Davis has hope for the future of the department.
“After three months I’m really convinced that we have a lot to work with in terms of getting public safety right.”
