MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — COVID-19 numbers in Wisconsin have hit the highest levels we’ve seen in over a year.
Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 5,097 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, the most in a single day since Nov. 24th of last year. It comes as the Omicron variant has popped up in the US.
“Early data from South Africa suggests that the Omicron variants can be spread more easily than prior versions,” said DHS Secretary Designee Karen Timberlake. “Including more easily than the Delta variant.”
The variant, discovered only a week ago, hasn’t been detected in the state yet, but has been found in California, Colorado, and Minnesota.
Over 9,000 Wisconsinites have died of COVID-19.
There have been 884,783 confirmed cases and 9,093 deaths in the state.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed all of Wisconsin in the “high” category for virus transmission.
