GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Tis the season…for a lot of garbage.
Brown County Residents generate 175,000 tons of garbage every single year, and during the holiday season, they generate more than at any other time.
“This time of year we probably generate as a society a quarter of all the waste we generate all year long,” says Mark Walter with Brown County Resource Recovery.
That garbage has to go somewhere. Right now, that place is the Outagamie County Landfill–but that won’t be the case much longer. It’s expected to reach capacity in 2023. That, however, comes as no surprise to anyone.
“Brown County has had a new landfill sighted in southern Brown County since the early nineties,” Walker explained. “That was in anticipation of needing a new landfill in the future.”
A new landfill, the Brown County South Landfill, is currently under construction.
“The landfill is probably one of the first brand new, from-the-ground-up landfills in Wisconsin in about 20 years,” Walker added.
It’s expected to open next year.
In the meantime, Walker encourages people to recycle whatever they can.
“When you’re out there shopping, take a look at what you’re shopping for,” said Walker. “Make sure that it’s something that down the line can be recycled there’s a lot of stuff out there that’s sold that can’t be.”
