GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Before Halloween, COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin were flat.
Now, area health professionals say virus activity is critically high in some areas.
Taylor Jacobson spent her Thanksgiving holiday battling COVID-19.
She’s fully vaccinated and plans to get her booster.
Still, she thinks it’s up to people if they get the shot or not.
“I believe in natural immunity and kind of go with that but if someone wants to get their booster and feel safer then sure,” said Jacobson.
Dan and Roger Peterson have a different opinion, they want to see more people using the vaccine to protect themselves from the virus.
“The issue with the non vaccination of people and the increasing rates of COVID it was major for us to get the booster,” said Roger Peterson.
Emergency physician at Bellin Health Dr. Brad Burmeister says booster shot numbers need to increase.
“The time is now to get that booster shot,” said Burmeister.
As of Sunday, The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports more 994,000 Wisconsinites have a booster shot.
Dr. Ashok Rai, President and CEO of Prevea Health says COVID-19 is spreading in Wisconsin.
As of Wednesday, DHS shows Brown County is categorized as having “critically high” case activity.
“Do you think higher numbers are pushing people to get the booster?” asked Fox 11.
“You know a lot of the disease activity is preventable through vaccination. That’s going to happen through better protection from the vaccine especially for some of the mild to moderate disease that we’re seeing, and that can be accomplished through boosters.” said Rai.
Rai suggests as we go into the holidays try to protect the most vulnerable by only gathering with fully vaccinated people and to make sure kids get vaccinated if eligible.
Both Bellin and Prevea are reporting a 20 percent increase in COVID-19 testing since Halloween.
