GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Jury deliberations continue in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse shot and killed two people and wounded a third during violence in Kenosha last year and claims self-defense, saying he was attacked.
The divisive trial has already prompted Governor Tony Evers to keep the national guard on standby in case of unrest in Kenosha.
In Green Bay, police are also on the lookout.
“Our analysts are watching it very closely,” Captain Ben Allen told WTAQ. “They’re watching any sources that might have information to let us know of any kind of gatherings or any kind of protests because of whatever comes out of that trial.”
Last year, protests devolved into unrest several times in Green Bay’s downtown over the summer. Allen says they learned from that.
“The extent of the unrest was unexpected,” Allen said. “We did know that there were some groups are gathering, but the violence that occurred and the damage that was done in the downtown area was a bit of a surprise.”
Property damage and looting were reported in Green Bay during that rioting. The riots occurred in May of last year following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and in August, 2020, following the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha.
