GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — There’s less than a week to go now until one of Wisconsin’s most popular outdoor activities.
Gun deer season begins this Saturday. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Jeff Pritzl says they’re expecting it to be a good one.
“I’d say all the arrows right now are pointing in the right direction,” said Pritzl. “Our current harvest trend from the arhcery and crossbow season…the buck harvest is running at or ahead of the 5 year average. We’re expecting about what we had last year, or even a little better.”
Over half a million people participate every year. Pritzl expects a little under 600,000 to participate.
Pritzl says there are still plenty of tags available, including antlerless tags, especially for hunts on private land.
“A lot of people do tend to wait until the last minute,” Pritzl told WTAQ. “We’ll sell a couple hundred thousand licenses this week, even on Friday, the day before the season opens.”
Those antlerless tags, Pritzl says, could be the difference between a successful hunt and a disappointment.
“Hopefully most parties have at least an antlerless tag or two amongst the group,” Pritzl said. “That gives them a better chance to put some venison in the freezer.”
The hunt lasts for nine days, ending November 28th.
