TOWN OF MAPLE VALLEY, WI (WTAQ) – A pilot was killed when their plane crashed in Oconto County Wednesday.
Around 6:15 p.m., dispatchers received a call about a plane that appeared to be descending near Kelly Lake.
The United States Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration said they were in the process of tracking a fixed-wing single-engine beech plane that was not responding to the control tower. Two jets escorting the plane said it flew too low, causing them to lose sight of it.
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) dispatches fighter jets from both the US Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force to unresponsive aircraft near the border zones of the US and Canada.
Dispatchers were also notified that the pilot, the only person onboard, was unresponsive.
The pilot has been identified as a 67 year old male from Grand Prairie, Texas.
Several agencies responded, with the FAA assisting in a search via helicopter. The plane was found between county roads G and K in the Town of Maple Valley.
The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, FAA, Wisconsin State Patrol and Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
