MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Jamie Schrank will spend at least 25 years in prison for the death of a toddler in her care.
Schrank, 41, was convicted by a jury in July of physical abuse of a child, repeated acts causing death, for the July 2018 death of a 3-year-old child.
Judge Robert Dewane issued the mandatory life prison term at Thursday’s sentencing hearing, but said she will be eligible to ask for extended supervision after 25 years, according to a court official.
Schrank had rejected a plea deal would have included the prosecutors recommending prison time of up to 20 years.
Previously, Eduardo Gamez was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the death.
In the complaint, doctors said the bruises left on the boy were point to “rough handling,” and doctors suspect the boy was being abused and neglected. It happened when Gamez and Schrank were babysitting the three-year-old boy while his mom was at work in July of 2018.
According to the criminal complaint, the two smoked meth while the boy and their five-year-old son were in the home July 28. The boy was taken to the hospital for internal and external injuries, where he died later that night. The complaint also says their son had bruises that indicate abuse and neglect.
