DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) — A woman was assaulted in broad daylight Tuesday morning on the East River Trail in De Pere.
De Pere police say the attack was reported around 11:30 this morning after the husband of the victim found their infant child near the trail without his wife.
“The husband of the victim called concerned because he located the infant child, and not his wife,” said De Pere Police Captain Jeremy Muraski. “So that was obviously very concerning because that was extremely out of character.”
Neither the nature of the assault nor the status of the victim were released.
The assault occurred on the northern end of the trail in De Pere, near the border with the Village of Allouez.
Police believe there was a single assailant.
A De Pere police spokesman said that they aren’t sure if there is any danger to the public.
“Do we believe there is any ongoing danger to the public? Right now, we’re not 100% certain,” said Muraski. “Right now, we advise caution.”
Muraski suggests people walking the trail travel in groups in well-lit areas and says personal defense devices such as pepper spray are “an option.”
“Unfortunately, you may not always have an opportunity to use those,” he added.
The impacted portion of the trail will remain closed for several hours.
