GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Catalytic converter theft is on the rise in the local area.
Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis on WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’ says it’s part of a nationwide increase in those thefts.
“People steal these for the precious metals that are in them,” Davis said. “But there are things you can do to prevent it.”
In the meantime, he suggests parking in a garage or well-lit area, and keeping an eye on cars in your neighborhood and reporting suspicious activity to police.
“Some businesses have started painting on their catalytic converters,” Davis explained. “So that they’re a little easier to track.”
The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system on your car that contains precious metals, such as platinum, palladium or rhodium, that make them a target for thieves.
