GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The original Shopko store appears to be getting a new, though temporary, use.
The Green Bay Redevelopment Authority approved a plan Tuesday to let H.J. Martin and Son use most of the Military Avenue building for storage and training. A portion would also be leased to Bellin Health for medical equipment rehabilitation. The approval was needed because the land is zoned for commercial use.
City staff members expressed concerns about the plan because it could set a precedent for temporary building uses and temporary plans can end up going longer than intended. The city hopes eventually to fill the spot with a commercial tenant.
The deal is for three years with two one-year extension opportunities.
H.J. Martin says it is working on a long-term plan for the property, which it purchased early last year.
City officials say H.J. Martin has been working with one interested developer on a mixed-use project which could include affordable housing, but there is currently no agreement.
Shopko, a department store chain based in Ashwaubenon, went out of business in 2019.
