MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) — The Supreme Court opted not to block the state of Texas’ law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy and now several other states are considering passing similar legislation.
Republican State Representative Elijah Behnke of Marinette ran for office on a platform opposing abortion, and says it’s something he would like to see in Wisconsin.
“I would love something like that here,” he told WTAQ. “But I haven’t seen anyone discussing legislating it.”
Behnke does expect the issue to be raised in future caucus sessions.
“We can bring up anything we want in closed caucus, that’s the point of it,” Behnke explained. “So there’s lot of ideas tossed around. Something like this, that would make the news, I’m sure it will be one of the first things we talk about when we caucus next.”
Behnke says he would either write or co-sponsor such legislation, but adds that such a law would certainly be vetoed by Democratic Governor Tony Evers.
