TOWNSEND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As Labor Day weekend approaches, some might say summer is slowing down, but that’s not the case in Northern Oconto County.
In Townsend, ATV riding, and a corn roast fundraiser highlight some of the season’s events.
ATVs and UTVs are on the move in Townsend. Trail officials say the routes are in good shape.
“They’ve been busy, and we’ve had some clean up. We’ve had a couple of storms earlier in the year that we had a lot of clean up to do, with trees down, stuff like that, and try to get them in better condition,” said Mike Malueg, Red Arrow Snowmobile/ATV Club Trail Boss.
Many of those riders are staying in the area, and stopping at places like The Old Town Hall Sports Bar & Restaurant. The owner says the pandemic had an impact.
“We closed for a couple months, and then we got started back up, with a real slow start, and this summer has been good. So it’s come around now,” said Josh Banie, Old Town Hall Sports Bar & Restaurant Owner.
Banie calls the improvement significant.
“We do a couple hundred for breakfast, and then we do at least 150 or more for dinner, so it’s going well,” he said.
And that’s not all. Just next door, volunteers are gearing up for the 15th annual corn roast. The event is a major fundraiser for the Red Arrow Snowmobile/ATV Club, and it can attract about a 1,000 people from around the region.
“Last year was our best year ever,” said Gary Wagner, Red Arrow Snowmobile/ATV Club Past President.
Wagner says the roast features food, music, raffles, and about 1,700 ears of sweet corn.
“I’m sure we’ll go through it all, because it’s so popular. The town gets packed with vehicles. I mean parking is at a commodity on Saturday, so come early and stay late,” he said.
Club officials say hundreds are expected to arrive on UTVs.
“We keep the trails real nice for the locals, and we groom on Friday to make them nice for the weekenders too,” said Malueg.
The Red Arrow Corn Roast begins Saturday morning at 10:30 with an ATV parade through town.
