GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County Sheriff’s officials say 2021 has been a difficult year in terms of staffing at the Brown County Jail.
Sixteen positions are open at the jail, which officials say was fully staffed last year.
Sheriff’s Captain Jody Lemmens says they were down from the start of the year.
“On top of that we had quite a few planned retirements. A couple resignations, a couple people that we had hired maybe didn’t make it through field training and things like that or decided that the career was not for them. But we just have not been able to get our feet back under us yet,” Lemmens said.
Lemmens says the department is always interviewing candidates.
“To make sure that we’re not sacrificing the quality of candidate that we’re getting. Utmost importance is going to be character, integrity, we have to have people that we know we can trust to be able to work pretty much independently and know that they’re going to do the right thing,” Lemmens said.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, the agency in charge of state department of corrections institutions, the vacancy rate for the agency is currently at 16.7%.
Starting pay for a correctional officer at the DOC is $19.03 an hour.
Lemmens says job requirements have not changed for positions at the Brown County Jail.
Lemmens says you must be 18 years old and legal to work in the United States, but you do not need to be a US citizen.
Education and experience is preferred, but not necessary.
Lemmens says the sheriff’s office has a few planned hires over the next few weeks
