GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Appleton’s airport says it saw a record-breaking month in July, surpassing the most monthly passengers in the airport’s 56-year history.
This past July, Appleton International Airport had more than 77,000 travelers pass through the airport, surpassing the previous record of 75,000 in March of 2019.
“The strong numbers show our community’s strong demand for travel after a year of being locked down due to the pandemic. We found that people are looking to kind of reclaim part of their lives,” Airport Director Abe Weber told WTAQ News. “They probably bought everything on their Amazon shopping cart list, and travel was about the last thing that they hadn’t been able to purchase. So all of the lower prices certainly helped.”
Weber is hopeful that the trend will continue to rise, and that COVID will eventually fall once again.
“It’s just a great feeling to know that our community continues to support Appleton airport and people getting out to travel again,” Weber said. “We sure hope that August and September continues to grow like June and July have.”
A mask requirement on all flights has been extended until at least January.
“Appleton Airport is back,” Outagamie County executive, Thomas Nelson said. “Local travelers tell us the convenience of nonstop flights to destinations like Atlanta, Charlotte, Denver and Las Vegas make ATW their preferred departure destination, which is a big reason why we’ve rebounded to beyond 100% of where we were before the pandemic.”
While the airport’s traveler numbers returned to pre-pandemic levels, the airport says it remains focused on providing its travelers with a safe and healthy travel experience. This includes regular and often cleaning of the terminal, mask requirements, and ongoing air ionization filtration that neutralizes virus particles.
