FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – An 88-year-old Fond du Lac man is now facing a charge of 4th offense OWI after being stopped by the state patrol on Monday night.
Arthur Aigner was stopped by the state patrol after driving on the wrong side of the road along Rolling Meadows Drive, near Military Road, around 9:40 p.m. Monday night. Aigner reportedly told the trooper he had been drinking earlier in the day. The trooper then noted indicators of impairment during field sobriety tests.
The arrest comes amid the enforcement of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Sergeant Luke Newman says while the trooper involved wasn’t on enforcement overtime, it was a no-brainer to stop a vehicle operating on the wrong side of the road right outside of the area headquarters.
“We generally always do that anyway. We are always looking for drivers that are impaired, to remove them and make things safer for everybody on the road,” Newman told WTAQ News.
As for the age factor, Newman says it doesn’t change much in terms of procedures.
“Regardless of age, whether they’re 21 or 88, we handle them the same. Put them through standard field sobriety tests to judge their impairment to see if they’re legal to drive or not. Unfortunately at this point, that subject was not,” Newman said. “Police cars aren’t necessarily built for comfort, so they’ll use a little more care getting them in and out and that kind of thing. But it’s generally the same as any other person.”
Newman reminds everyone to have a designated driver to get you home after a night of drinking – and if it turns into a night where you didn’t plan on drinking and did, that there are plenty of options between cabs, LYFT, and Uber to get you home.
