ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — There were plenty of smiles in the stands at the Green Bay Packers family night, in spite of rain putting a damper on some aspects of the celebration.
The event was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re happy to be back, we’re happy to be out rain or shine. We’re out here, so we’re excited,” Packers fan Alexandra Acevedo said.
Acevedo traveled to Green Bay from Chicago.
She clearly made the right choice in what sports team to support, and says it’s good to be reunited with the community once again.
“It just feels like family, it feels like home. So we love coming here,” Acevedo said.
Although the rain brought some complications, fans still made their way back to the bowl for the start of the game.
Green Bay Packers Director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey says the organization has been looking forward to this for a long time.
“The team was excited to come out of the tunnel. Of course we had some weather we’re working through but fingers crossed we get a decent amount of practice in, but bottom line it’s great to be back in the stadium with a lot of fans,” Popkey said.
The Packers updated COVID protocols to meet the CDC’s most recent guidelines.
Popkey says the Packers encourage all fans to follow them and to get vaccinated.
“We know above and beyond all the protocols, that’s the best way to be dealing with the pandemic,” Popkey said.
The first preseason game is next Saturday, where the Packers will take on the Houston Texans.
