OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Dramatic increases in COVID-19 cases in Oconto and Winnebago counties have health officials asking people to take steps to stop the spread.
Oconto County’s transmission level went from low to high between July 23 and 30, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Winnebago County was listed as having substantial transmission as of Thursday.
Health leaders in both counties are urging people to wear masks in indoor settings and crowded outdoor settings. Physical distancing, frequent hand-washing and staying home when sick are also encouraged.
Health officials are also asking people to be vaccinated to minimize the likelihood of severe illness and death. Because people who are vaccinated can still become infected and spread the delta variant of the coronavirus, the CDC recommends people be tested three to five days after being exposed to someone with COVID-19 and wearing a mask indoors in public settings or until they receive a negative test.
