GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – As the state’s eviction moratorium ends, area shelters are preparing to see an influx in families becoming homeless and seeking their services.
“We’re concerned about the impact this can have on families in the community,” said Freedom House President Jessica Diederich. “We’re trying to do as much as we can to be preventing that with families, if they call to any of the area shelters.”
She points out that many people were laid off or forced to change their line of work due to the pandemic’s impact on a number of different industries around the area. However, some industries have been struggling due to a lack of people sending in applications.
“We’re helping to really get them prepared to be able to apply for jobs where we see a worker shortage, and there’s a lot of opportunity out there,” Diederich said.
Diederich says in many cases, families may be able to see the eviction notice coming. That’s why she recommends reaching out for help before you’re shown the door.
“[If they’re] trying to figure out a way to prevent being evicted, they can literally call any of the shelters in the area. We all have access to the same resources and funding mechanisms to help keep them in their homes,” Diederich told WTAQ News. “If they do find themselves in a position where they’re not going to be able to stay in their current situation and find themselves evicted, the area shelters will be here and ready to support them.”
